The Boeing 737

Introduced in 1965, the 737 has become the best selling jetliner of all time. The type is also popular with SimFlyers and virtual airlines, and has been available in Flight Simulator for some time now.

A number of Aviation World Records have been set over the years by 737 crews. Most of these records are "speed over a commercial route" records flown by airline pilots during their scheduled flights.

Your Challenge - Chicago, IL (USA) to Boise, ID (USA)

Let's see how you would do on the "Chicago to Boise" leg. The record has already been established... and superseded as follows :

Speed over a commercial air route

    Pilot : Mario Jerez (USA)
    Aircraft : Boeing 737-500 (N926UA)
    Airline : United Airlines
    Date of flight : 06 April 1997

Previous record:

    Performance: 769.01 km/h
Pilot : Vaughn B. Cordle (USA)
    Aircraft : Boeing 737-300 (N373UA)

Pre-flight check

Before you take off, we have a few recommendations and information for you :

  • the rules governing "speed over commercial air route records" can be consulted on the FAI Web Site. They make an interesting reading for anybody who wishes to challenge the existing record.
  • this record was flown during a scheduled flight, which means that the pilot did not have any opportunity to wait for optimal weather and air traffic constraints. He had to cope with the conditions he faced at that time. You should bear this in mind when comparing your own performance to the above mentioned ones.
  • the official record distance used by FAI for the Chicago-Boise course is 2307.06 km . The flight time to use to compute the speed is the time between take-off and touchdown.

Runway cleared...

Ok, you have now done this flight and have an interesting speed to report, a wish to discuss any specific point, or share a flight plan you feel is ideal for this challenge. Go to our Discussion Board where we have set up a forum specifically for this challenge.

If you would like to propose an addition to the list of links featured on this page, or an interesting piece of software (737 aircraft or panel file, scenery file, etc.), contact FlightSim@fai.org. We will be pleased to add to the "download" and "link" section of this page.

This challenge is the first opening of our records book to the world of flight simulation. We have a number of ideas in the workshop, including rules for FlightSim competitions. If you have suggestions and comments on this broader subject, you will also find a dedicated forum on our Discussion Board.
